Where are you, God? Oh, how many times I’ve heard myself crying out these words over the past ten years.

It’s easy to feel that God has forgotten those of us who’ve been fighting a battle or awaiting an answered prayer. Some days it feels as though my legs would collapse from underneath me and didn’t know where I’d find the strength to wake up and do it all over again. But……….somehow, it always did show up, that strength.

I love this song and when I went to watch it’s accompanying video on YouTube, I found it a little dark, so it made me curious to know if there was a story behind it. There’s always a story, right? I found out that the song was about the artist’s battle with depression and anxiety. She said “This song is incredibly important to me, and it’s a little bit harder for me to talk about because it’s such a deep part of my story and it is a little bit darker.” You can read the full article here.

There’s one line in particular that struck me when I listened to the song and as this journey of mine continues, it’s becoming clearer and clearer to me why God keeps highlighting certain words and images. The line “Deep down there’s a well of faith”, helped me realize that part of the purpose in the pain we suffer is to deepen our faith bucket drawing upon that living water when the darkness clouds us from seeing Him.

In my January Newsletter, there was a beautiful poem I shared by Joyce Rupp, and I close with this line that speaks to the depths of my own faith – I share it below. The imagery it evokes is exactly why I chose the rooted tree as the symbol for my coaching business logo – to seek God on a deeper level to help others draw on that Living Water through the ordinary and hard seasons of life.

Like terminal buds drawing strength from the roots of a wintered tree, we greet the darkest days of the year with hope, trusting that the potency of the Holy One’s love will reinforce this essence of our being.
